Last night, my son sent me information on McDonald’s latest burger. The burger came out in late December of 2017. It is the McVegan Burger. Curious, I started reading articles about their new product, and the burger received positive reviews. It was introduced in Sweden and Finland. The burger is now available at their Chicago Headquarters. Following my research on the new McVegan burger I remembered this story. My friend dropped a McDonald French fry underneath her car seat, and she discovered the lone chip a year later. It still looked the same. What is in those fries that would keep them from deteriorating? The discovery of this video by Michael Pollan answered the question. He wrote the Omnivore’s Dilemma and produced several documentaries about the food on our plates. The video is a little over 3 minutes and worth your time.
Back to the McVegan burger. I would be concerned about the sourcing of the McDonalds McVegan burger. Also, I could not find any information on the bun and whether it is vegan. Most hamburger buns receive an egg or dairy wash to give them a shiny top. If one is craving a burger, I would save a buck, go home and cook a vegan burger. It will taste fresh and delicious, and you will know the ingredients.
- Make vegan patties ahead of time and freeze them for those cravings.
- Careful to choose vegan hamburger buns (make sure they are vegan).
- Use lettuce or vegan bread instead of buns.
